Landcover Maps of Afghanistan
The Landcover map of Afghanistan details land cover for each of the provinces of Afghanistan. This map, produced through the collaborative efforts of FAO, UNDP and the Afghan Geodesy & Cartography Office Kabul, was created as a means of indicating land cover activities and patterns within the country, and can be seen as an important tool in the management of both agricultural activity and rehabilitation strategy. The Landcover map is based on interpretation of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) satellite imagery of Afghanistan, acquired in 1990 (full coverage) and 1993 (partial coverage). The interpretation was assisted through the use of space photographs of various regions of Afghanistan, acquired from1988 through 1992. The topographic base used for this map is derived from National 1:100,000 Topographic Maps which were compiled by stereo photogrammetric method using aerial photographs acquired in the late 1950s.
